SPEAKER BIO: Ross Ramsey is executive editor and co-founder of The Texas Tribune. Before joining the Tribune, Ross was editor and co-owner of Texas Weekly for 15 years. He did a 28-month stint in government as associate deputy comptroller for policy and director of communications with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Before that, he reported for the Houston Chronicle from its Austin bureau and for the Dallas Times Herald, first on the business desk in Dallas and later as its Austin bureau chief, and worked as a Dallas-based freelance business writer, writing for regional and national magazines and newspapers. Ross got his start in journalism in broadcasting, covering news for radio stations in Denton and Dallas.

This session will explore key policy issues that state legislatures will consider this year, highlighting issues of importance to the accounting profession. In addition, the speaker will offer suggestions for effective advocacy in our increasingly virtual world.  

SPEAKER BIO: Joe Crosby serves as Chairman & CEO of MultiState Associates, the nation's leading state and local government relations services firm. Joe is involved in all aspects of the firm’s efforts to help clients resolve the challenges they face in the state and local government arena, with a concentration on providing strategic counsel, identifying and deploying political assets, and advancing tax policy objectives. 

Joe is a nationally recognized expert on state and local business tax policy. He earned his bachelor's degree in history from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and completed graduate course work in economic policy at American University in Washington. 

 

Carlos BarreraWEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27

Carlos Barrera, CPA, CFE

SPEAKER BIO: Barrera has been delivering audit and tax services to individuals and corporations for more than 40 years. He also performs forensic accounting services and conducts fraud investigations. Much of his industry expertise comes from working closely with governmental entities and not-for-profit organizations.

Barrera is the current chair of the National Association of State Board of Accountancy (NASBA), a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TXCPA), the Government Finance Officers Association and is a former member and presiding officer of the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. He is also active in the Brownsville community, serving as a board member for the Valley Zoological Society (Gladys Porter Zoo) and the Valley Zoological Endowment. He is also part of the Brownsville Economic Development Corporation and the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce.

 

 

Manuel CavazosWEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27

Manuel “Manny” Cavazos, IV, Esq., CPA

SPEAKER BIO: Manuel Cavazos IV, was appointed chair of the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy following completion of a term as Chair of the Texas Credit Union Department. Mr. Cavazos is a self-employed CPA and Attorney in Austin, previously of Brownsville and Laredo.

Mr. Cavazos has extensive experience in Natural Gas serving as an Ex VP with Western Gas Interstate and an Officer for the NYSE company. He was head of the cost accounting for the Oil Production facilities in the North Slope of Alaska for Haliburton/Brown& Root.  International experience includes serving as the Controller for the support facilities for the AWACS and F-16 for five bases in Saudi Arabia for CRS and Metcalf & Eddy with extensive travel throughout Europe.  Additionally, he was employed as the Head of the legal and financial compliance for Water Districts for the State of Texas.

He is a member of the Texas Society of CPAs, American Bar Association, and California State Bar. He is a former board member of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a former board member and treasurer of the Texas Society to Prevent Blindness.  Mr. Cavazos received a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Texas at Austin and a Juris Doctor from Taft Law School.

 

Tracey GoldenWEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27

Tracey Golden CPA, CGMA

SPEAKER BIO: Golden is the Chair of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and Chair of the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. Golden has held a number of volunteer leadership positions at the AICPA, previously serving as a member of the Board of Directors and governing Council, as well as Chair of both the Audit and Finance committee and Peer Review Board. In addition, she has served as the Board Liaison to the AICPA Foundation Board of Trustees and a member of the Relations with the Bar and National Peer Review committees.

Prior to recently retiring as an audit partner with Deloitte, Golden had responsibility for facilitating and coordinating reputation and risk related initiatives and matters and collaborating with member firm leadership to proactively identify emerging risk matters and monitor and facilitate managing existing risks in the Americas region.

Golden is an active speaker, presenting at many AICPA and state CPA society conferences on topics including leadership in accounting firms, growing the CPA pipeline and trends in the profession.

She is a member of both the Connecticut and Virginia State CPA Societies. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and several of its committees. She also serves on the board of the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County.

Golden has been recognized for her experience and leadership in the accounting profession. She was named as one of the Most Powerful Women in Accounting by the AICPA and CPA Practice Advisor, and was awarded the AICPA Sustained Contribution Award, recognizing her years of volunteer service on AICPA committees. Golden received her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Georgetown University.
