Local Fraud Trends - Lieutenant Augustin Maldonado, Corpus Christi Police Department
Overview: This session provides a real world view of fraud based on current trends observed by local law enforcement. Participants will gain insight into how fraud cases are identified, investigated, and escalated within law enforcement, as well as best practices for preserving records and information when fraud is suspected. Emphasis is placed on early recognition of red flags, understanding the investigative process, and avoiding actions that could inadvertently compromise a criminal investigation.

Understanding APS: A Guide for Community Partners - Marissa Segovia, Adult Protective Services
Overview: The session provides insight on Adult Protective Services (APS) authority, role, and responsibilities with investigating abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation amongst the vulnerable adult population with a focus on financial exploitation. The session will explain what APS investigates and services that may be implemented to alleviate financial exploitation. It will explore red flags and obstacles in investigations, such as victim refusal, and some actions APS may use to still address financial exploitation.

Overview: This session provides a high level introduction to FBI InfraGard, its mission, and its role in the Coastal Bend region. Presented from an awareness perspective, the course explains how InfraGard supports information sharing between the FBI and the private sector to enhance understanding of cyber threats, fraud trends, and other risks affecting businesses and financial professionals.
Participants will gain insight into the types of threat intelligence and resources InfraGard provides, how those efforts intersect with the accounting profession. The session is designed to build familiarity with the agency and its local presence, improve situational awareness, and help understand how federal threat intelligence relates to risks they may encounter in professional practice
