Mary E. Smith, age 87, of Houston, Texas passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June, 13, 2023. She was a long time member, active member of Relationships with Tax Authorities committee, including serving as vice chair, passed away in June and her celebration of life service will be on Monday, July 10, 2023 at 1:00 pm.

Patrick B. Collins, 1971-1972 TXCPA Houston President, passed away on March 14 in Plano, Texas at age 94.

 A Rosary will be held on Thursday, March 30 at 5:30 p.m. at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail in Houston. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 31 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Vianney, followed by a celebration of Pat’s life at Lakeside Country Club, 100 Wilcrest Dr. in Houston.

Kelly J. Hunter, CPA, the Immediate Past President and Board member of TXCPA Houston, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. Kelly was the managing shareholder of Fitts, Roberts, and Kolkhorst. He was known for his countless hours of service to the Houston CPA community serving on various committees ranging from Accounting Scholarships, IT, CPE, Strategic Planning, and more. Kelly leaves behind his wife, Jennifer, and his daughter, Emily. He leaves a huge hole in the hearts of his beloved family, many friends, colleagues, and all of us here at TXCPA Houston who were privileged to know him. The legacy Kelly leaves at TXCPA Houston is immeasurable.

 

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 15, 2022, at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary of Friendswood United Methodist Church, 110 N. Friendswood Drive, Friendswood, Texas, 77546.

Amanda Belle Freeman Pike Ransleben Cowan was born in McCamey TX July 14, 1938, and died Wednesday, August 4, 2021 age 83 years and 21 days. Amanda was a CPA and received her Master’s degree in Liberal Arts from Houston Baptist University. Steven J. Tillinger of Corpus Christi, Texas passed away on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at the age of 75. Steven was a brilliant CPA and an incredible resource for the profession on the state and national levels. We feel very fortunate to have had him as a valuable member and CPE instructor at the Texas Society of CPAs for so many years. Steve is gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

A chapel service for Steve will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 16, 2022, at I. J. Morris Star of David Funeral Home, 9321 Memorial Park Road, Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Following the chapel service will be an interment at 1:30 p.m. at I. J. Morris Star of David Cemetery, 9321 Memorial Park Road, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33412. Douglass Lee Simmons (Texas Certificate #105407 Life Member) passed away on October 18, 2021, at 92 years of age. Douglass earned a BBA and MBA from Texas A&M University and became a CPA. In 1951 he was called to active duty in the U.S. Army where he served in Germany and attained the rank of Captain. He retired from Tenneco as Director of Corporate Systems and Computer Services in 1985 after 30 years of service.

A memorial service celebrating Douglass' life will be held at St. Philip Presbyterian Church, 4807 San Felipe, Houston, Texas 77056, on November 4, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. For those who cannot attend in person, the service will be live-streamed on www.saintphilip.net. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Douglass' memory to St. Philip Presbyterian Church Kids Against Hunger Program.

Myron Bergson Marks passed away on Friday, October 15, 2021, at 100 years of age. Myron attended the University of Texas at Austin, and he received a Bachelor of Business Administration in June of 1941. Myron volunteered to join the Navy and served on active duty in a number of different positions until the summer of 1946. When released from active duty, Myron returned to the University of Texas, completed the last year of Law School, received a Degree of Bachelor of Laws, and passed the State Bar exam in 1947. He enrolled for another year, excelled in all the accounting courses, and passed the State Certified Public Accounting exam.

After working for a CPA, Myron started in 1950 to build his own firm. In 1951, he formed an accounting partnership, Kobb, Marks & Company, with Sol Kobb. In 1967, with the advent of computers, they merged with another local firm, and formed Bahme Lee Kobb & Marks, with Bernard Lee and Jay Bahme. In 1969, as Houston and their firm grew, they merged with a National CPA Firm, Seidman & Seidman, that had opened offices here. In 1975, Myron was appointed national director of practice development. After merging with a British, a Dutch, and a German firm to become an international firm, Seidman became BDO Seidman, presently BDO USA LLP. In 1986, according to the partnership agreement, the year in which he attained the age of 65, Myron had to retire, after a tenure of 37 years. Myron loved attending seminars to keep his Law and CPA licenses current.

Clinton Frank Bateman (Texas Certificate 005892, issued July 1962) passed away on June 25, 2021. Clint was a graduate of Baylor University and a member of TXCPA and TXCPA Houston for 59 years. Clint proudly served as the 1985-1986 President of the Houston CPA Society.

Roy Edgar Box, Jr., Texas Certificate 005899 issued July 1962, passed away on June 8, 2021. Roy was a graduate of the University of Texas and has been a life member of TXCPA and TXCPA Houston for 58 years.

Walter A. Saunders, Jr, Texas Certificate 007120 issued August 1965, passed away on April 25, 2021. Walter was a University of Houston graduate and has been a member of TXCPA and TXCPA Houston for 55 years.

Randolph “Randy” Peyton Burch, Sr. passed away May 28, 2021, at the age of 88. Randy founded his CPA firm Burch & Co. in 1965. An early adopter of technology for the accounting profession, he built a national reputation with his firm Burch Consultants. Randy volunteered with Houston Chapter committees including Members in Industry, PAC Steering, and Charity Event Steering, and served in developing the Members of an Accounting Practice “MAP” curriculum.
