How to become a CPA in Texas
Education
- Earn a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, ideally in accounting or a related business field
- Complete 150 total credit hours, including required upper-level accounting and business courses
- An alternative 120-hour pathway with additional experience will be available starting August 2026
Exam
- Pass all sections of the Uniform CPA Exam
- Earn a score of 75 or higher on each section
Experience
- Complete supervised accounting work under a licensed CPA in good standing
- Typically one year of experience, or two years under the 120-hour pathway
Final Step: Apply for Your License
- Submit your application, transcripts, experience verification, ethics requirements, and fees to the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy
